Travelers' Intercom

After being mugged while traveling in Naples, Italy, in 2011, I was quicky reimbursed by the travel insurance company Travelex (800/228-9792), recouping my stolen/damaged property costs (less depreciation).

However, following a 10-day tour of Greece in May ’13, when United Airlines delivered my luggage to me back in Des Moines four days after my return, Travelex required a copy of the lost/delayed baggage claim filed in Athens and the EXACT wording of the claim resolution (I had to...

Ever since November 2012, when Kayak.com — the long-used, independent travel search engine — was purchased by Priceline.com, I have no longer been depending on it as an independent source of the best airfares.

The information given at the time of the purchase said KAYAK would remain an independent unit of Priceline. And, indeed, KAYAK looks and works the same, but now when you “select” a ticket option on KAYAK, you are not always sent to that airline’s website. Kayak sometimes sends...

At the end of the letter “Ethiopia Tour Did Not Go As Planned” (Dec. ’13, pg. 23) is an editor’s note with a tip for travelers about carrying the phone number of, among other offices, the American Embassy. Yes, travelers should have this, but I would warn, ‘Do not depend on their help for anything other than getting a new passport.’

I’m not sure how we Americans came to believe that all we have to do is to reach the consulate or embassy and all our problems will be solved. The reality...

Here’s something my husband, David, and I learned on a 2012 trip to Europe: don’t be afraid of public transportation, even when you are pressed for time. There are times when it really is your best option.

Following a cruise to Norway aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas that began and ended in Denmark, we would be flying from Copenhagen to Nice. Everyone told us we’d really be cutting it short, since we hadn’t allowed the recommended five hours between docking...

Anyone who develops a rash, blister or some other skin reaction while taking acetaminophen should stop using the drug and seek medical care immediately because the painkiller poses the risk for three rare but potentially fatal skin disorders, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in many prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers. It also appears in combination drug products to treat conditions ranging from allergies...

The ochre-colored Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta.

While most travelers to northern Italy are familiar with its beautiful Lake District and the many villages and villas that line the two most popular lakes, Lago Maggiore and Lago di Como, there is a hidden gem located on the shores of the smaller, less-visited Lago di Orta.

The picturesque village of Orta San Giulio has all the elements of a quaint Italian village: a beautiful church, the ochre-colored Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta (pictured above); charmingly worn buildings with...

Ouch! What a horrifying story (Nov. ’13, pgs. 2 & 66) — four-and-a-half days in transit from India to California! I commend the Burges for their self-restraint and resilience. Had I been in either of their shoes, I would now be awaiting trial in New York City for manslaughter. Maybe multiple counts of manslaughter.

While the Burges’ saga may have been unavoidable, the story does raise some issues worth pondering. Undoubtedly, air travel these days is a crapshoot, even under the...

In the article “Things To Do Before You Cruise,” in his August ’13 “The Cruising World” column, Lew Toulmin recommended prebooking ships’ excursions before sailing. I completely agree.

As a partially mobility-impaired traveler who uses a Rollator-style walker, I always book my shore tours ahead. When I board the ship, my excursion tickets are either waiting in my cabin or arrive shortly.

On the first afternoon aboard, I take my walker and my tickets to the Shore Excursion desk...
