Travelers' Intercom

Just wanted to follow up on the letter “Alsatian Wine Route with LCA Toptour” (June ’14, pg. 12) in which Stephen O. Addison, Jr., wrote about his excellent experience with LCA Toptour (8 Place de la Gare, 68000, Colmar, France; phone 03 89 41 90 88).

My husband, Malcolm, and I had a very similar experience with this company in March 2014. We found their brochure when we visited the tourist office in Colmar, France, and we had the young lady book a tour of the Route des Vins d’Alsace...

Jane O’Brien and the statue of Lady Linshui at Lady Linshui Temple in Tainan, Taiwan.

While my wife, Jane, and I were on a group tour of Taiwan in May 2013, we decided to take a side trip via train to Tainan, four hours south of the country’s capital, Taipei. We knew there were several Taoist temples in Tainan.

Traveling by train was easy there. About six weeks before our trip, I ordered the train tickets for our trip to Tainan online. We picked them up at the station.

When we got off the train, we were only a few steps from our hotel, the Shangri-La Far...

My wife, Sandy, and I arrived in Hong Kong, China, a stop on our ’round-the-world trip, in July 2013. Looking for excitement, we took the funicular to the top of Victoria Peak. There were lots of little fast-food joints up there plus, at the terminus of the road up to the peak, a place that was definitely upscale. It was in a very fine contemporary house sitting across the street from and south of the terminus for the funicular.

We went in. Most diners were eating family style,...

I want to tell you about the wonderful dinner my wife, Jeanne, and I had in Indonesia on New Year’s Eve 2013.

We were staying in Yogyakarta at the Novotel Hotel (Jalan Jendral Sudirman 89, 55223 Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia; phone +[62] 274 580930).

Our travel agent had made reservations for us to have dinner at the hotel on the night we arrived, Dec. 30, but we got in too late to eat, so we arranged to eat there the next night instead.

We then had a choice to make, as...

A reader mentioned that when he travels, he now carries a note from his doctor explaining that he has an artificial knee (May ’14, pg. 43).

My surgeon’s office provided me with a plastic, credit-card-sized card that reads, “The joint prosthesis implanted in this patient may activate metal detection devices,” followed by my name, implant type (knee), date of surgery and name of surgeon. On the other side is the name and address of the hospital.

If I set off the alarm at airport...

The writer of the letter “Now Carries a Doctor’s Note” (May ’14, pg. 43) wanted to know if other travelers with artificial limbs or metal in their bodies carried doctors’ notes verifying the implants.

I’ve had two hip replacements, and after each one I was given a photo ID on which there was a picture of the prosthesis on one side and, on the reverse, my name, my doctor’s name, the date of the surgery and the make and model of the implant.

I carried these cards for a few years...

I would like to respond to the letter written by a traveler with an artificial knee.

Starting in 1998, after my initial hip-replacement surgery, I have traveled overseas numerous times. Since 2001, I have had another hip replacement, two knee replacements and a titanium bolt placed in my shoulder.

After each surgery, I was given a card, similar to a credit card, with my name, date of surgery, doctor, hospital, type of implant and manufacturer. Those cards stay with me in my...

On my trips, I often go hiking. Since I cannot carry hiking poles onto planes in my carry-on pack, I’ve always had to check at least one piece of luggage.

At the sporting-equipment store REI, I found Black Diamond-brand poles, which have three telescoping sections.*

I still need to check a bag, but the poles will fit in a bag that’s much smaller than the one I used to have to check through.
