Travelers' Intercom

A few years ago I got the British Airways Chase Visa card, since I had been promised 100,000 bonus miles and was told that it would charge no foreign transaction fees. I quickly racked up 150,000 miles and a companion voucher for British Airways. However, this turned out to be worthless.

First, I never found seats available for the times that I wanted to travel.

Second, when I went to book a flight with the miles, British Air would add a huge fuel surcharge, so my ticket would...

In my haste to head to the Honolulu airport on my way to take a river cruise that started in Yakutsk, the capital of the Turkic Republic of Sakha in far-eastern Russia, in July 2014, I forgot to take extra cash. I had maybe $700 and some travelers’ checks from a previous trip. I did have two credit cards and some old American Express (AmEx) travelers’ checks with me.

I flew first to Seoul, South Korea, one of the few places from which you can fly into Siberia without...

I traveled to Kenya, June 12-24, 2014, with Road Scholar (Boston, MA; 800/454-5768, www.roadscholar.org) and I want to commend the company for not canceling this tour even though there were only four of us. Apparently, there had been 16 people registered for this trip, but 12 canceled because of perceived danger in Kenya.

All of the promised accommodations, safaris and lectures (a hallmark of Road Scholar trips) were exactly as promised.

More importantly, I want to encourage...

Following a barge trip in Burgundy, France, in celebration of my husband, Steve’s, 80th birthday, we flew to Istanbul, then to Antakya (ancient Antioch), located on southern Turkey’s easternmost Mediterranean coast, about 30 miles from the Syrian border.

What was to be a 3-week journey with two other couples turned out to be just the two of us with our wonderful new friend and fabulous, attentive guide, Ümit Dogan, owner of Treasures of Travel (Edmonds, WA; 800/572-0526, www.treasures...

I spent five super-great weeks in the UK, mostly in Scotland, in late summer of 2013. Two of those weeks were spent doing tours with Explore! (Nelson House, 55-59 Victoria Rd., Farnborough, Hampshire, GU14 7PA, U.K.; phone 0843 634 5157, www.explore.co.uk). one in Orkney and one in Hebrides and Skye.

I flew into Scotland on July 29 and around Aug. 4 joined the tour “Discover Orkney,” priced at £699 (near $1,093). It ended around Aug. 10. There wasn’t much walking on that one.

My wife, Patti, and I had made arrangements for a stay in the Galápagos Islands, but we also wanted to see the Andes in South America and some of the Ecuadorian village areas where she had served in the Peace Corps. A short news item about Ecuador’s new Tren Crucero, or Cruise Train (Aug.’13, pg. 4), sealed the deal.

For our mainland trip, Jan. 11-17, 2014, we made arrangements through an agency in Quito, Ecuador, that had been highly rated on TripAdvisor.com: EQ Touring...

When my friend Kay Van Patten and I spent a week in Prague, Czech Republic, in September-October 2014, we knew we wanted to have at least one “special” meal there. Based purely on location — riverside tables with a view of the Charles Bridge — we chose Hergetova Cihelná (Cihelná 2b, Prague, Bohemia 118 00, Czech Republic; phone +420 296 826 103, www.kampagroup.com/en).

Because it was the end of “peak” tourist season in Prague and because we were...

When I finished my junior year at Dartmouth College in 1961, my classmates and I suddenly realized that the upcoming summer would be our last long, free vacation time for many years. Once we graduated the following year, the carefree summer months would be replaced by graduate school, first jobs or military service.

My Dartmouth roommate, Charles, another classmate Bernie, Doug from my class at Deerfield Academy and I all decided to visit Europe. The four of us met in Paris, where we...
