In Japan, Kawagoe, or Little Edo, is an old castle town with a river running through it. Full of pre-WWII architecture, the streets still show traditional merchants’ warehouses and temples.

It’s a 24-minute train ride from Tokyo to Ikebukuro Station by JR Yamanote Line plus another 33 minutes to Kawagoe Station by Tobu-Tojo Line (regular express), for a total cost of ¥640 ($7).

The new company Get My Boat (San Francisco, CA; 415/365-6383) lists a selection of boats around the world to rent, either from companies or individuals. 10,500 boats in over 1,000 cities in 70 countries are listed. Some come with a skipper.

Prices vary from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per day, depending on the size of the boat, and some rentals require a deposit. Example — a 38-foot sailboat that sleeps seven is available for rent in Marseille, France, for $294 per day or $2,064 per week.

For people of all ages, more than 50 one-week courses are offered at Christ Church College in Oxford, July 4-Aug. 7, 2010. Among them are “Castles in Britain,” “Jane Austen’s Heroines” and “Victorian Scandals.” There are no prerequisites to enroll, and the classes are taught without papers to write or tests to take. No academic credit is offered.

Adding to sites in over 100 airports, the Transportation Security Administration announced in December that it will be opening more than 300 centers across the country at which US citizens can enroll in the TSA Pre√™ (Pre-check) system, which allows for expedited security screening at airports for approved travelers. 

By submitting an application and a fee of $85 (good for five years), a traveler may be certified for the program after providing background interviews, fingerprints and other biographical information.

In January, North Korean officials announced that Americans now may visit at any time of year for up to seven days. Previously, Americans could visit only during the Arirang Mass Performances, August-October, on five-day tours.

Travelers (even a party of one) still must have a guide. Currently, 16 companies can arrange tours to North Korea; visit http://wikitravel.org/en/North_Korea. The only US company currently offering tours is Asia Pacific Travel (Kenilworth, IL; 800/262-6420).
