The valley near Vila Nova de Foz Côa, in northeastern Portugal, is home to extensive displays of underground and outdoor Paleolithic art — horses, aurochs (wild bulls), etc.

The site, which was originally to be covered with water from a dam, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and opened to the public. In the center is the museum Quinta da Ervamoira, showing bread making and wine producing.

On the southwest coast of Wales, the annual Mud Festival takes place in 2008 on Sept. 6-7. Showcasing mud’s importance in estuaries, activities include welly wanging (the throwing of a Wellington boot as far into the estuary as one can), tug-of-war, mud hut construction and a “mud safari” walk in the estuary.

Norway’s heritage will be the focus of a year-long program entitled “Year of Cultural Heritage in 2009.” It will include exhibitions, cultural tours, monument collections and school projects. The website www.kulturminneaaret2009.no/english will pre­sent a cultural monument of the week and an article of the month.

A “Phuket Town Treasure Map” shows a 2-kilometer walking trail of the Old Town of Phuket, Thailand, identifying historic buildings, shops and restaurants and offering snippets of information.
