On Egypt’s Giza Plateau, six Old Kingdom tombs, constructed in the Fourth Dynasty (2890-2686 BC), are to be opened by the end of 2012. The most famous, that of Princess Meresankh III, granddaughter of the pharaoh Khufu, has been closed to the public for 25 years.

The other tombs were built for the overseer of the House of Life, the overseer of the soul priests, the overseer of the king’s farms, the overseer of the royal treasury and King Khufu’s treasurer. The restored tombs have façades, rock pillars, large chambers and decorated walls.

In September 2013, the cruise ship Costa Concordia was pried loose from the rocks near Giglio island on which it had run aground off the coast of Italy on Jan. 13, 2012.

Using pulleys and counterweight systems, it took about 18 hours to rotate the ship upright, though it’s not floating yet. The plan is to, in spring 2014, refloat the ship using welded-on flotation devices filled with air and tow it to a scrap yard to disassemble it.

Performances and exhibitions are being held in Zürich, Switzerland, this year to commemorate Richard Wagner’s 200th birthday. From 1849 to 1858 the composer lived in the city, where he began composing the operas that became the famed “Ring” cycle.

The exhibition “Valkyries over Zürich,” at the Kunsthaus Zürich May 24-Aug. 18, will show photographs and set designs plus drawings of early Wagner stagings. The “Winged Victory of Samothrace,” the statue that normally stands at the top of the main staircase in Paris’ Louvre Museum, has been removed from view for support reinforcement and a cleaning. Its return is expected in June 2014.

The main gallery of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum (Jan Luijkenstraat 1, 1071 CJ, Amsterdam; phone +31 20 674 7000), which closed for a €375-million renovation in 2003, will reopen to the public on April 13, 2013. A small section had remained open to display certain works.

The museum’s collection consists of about 8,000 works of art, most notably paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, including Vermeer’s “The Milkmaid” and Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch,” as well as sculptures and decorative arts.
