Funniest thing

This month’s winner is SUE HUNT of Placerville, California:

On our trip to Myanmar with Vantage Adventures in October 2016, my husband and I stayed at a nice hotel in Yangon (Rangoon) for two nights. At breakfast, a waitress came to our table with two carafes. I smiled at her, pointed to my half-full cup of coffee and said, “Just warm it up, please.”

She promptly filled my cup with hot water.

Well, she did as I had asked. So I drank it.

Touring the Eastern European capitals, our group came to Moscow. The day was hot, and no matter how comfortably I dressed, sweat rained off me.

I could not wait to return to the hotel for a cold drink. I went to the dining room, where the waiters were preparing for lunch, and said, “Orange soda.” The waiter understood and brought me an orange soda, but it was warm!

Having learned that the Russian word for “ice” was yad, I pointed to my glass and said, “Yad. Yad.”

The waiter viewed me with a stunned look and, astonishingly,...

This month’s winner is SAMANTHA SARTAIN of Colorado Springs, CO:

In school in 1951, I loved Greek history, so I was thrilled when my dad got orders to go to Athens for three years.

Soon after we got a house, etc., I asked him if we could go to Sparta, so he consulted some Greek friends at the American Embassy.

One of them said, “I’m sorry, Colonel Sartain, but you can’t go to Sparta.”

My dad instantly thought that there was still fighting going on or the Communists were there or that there was lots of unrest.

The Greek friend continued his sentence with...

In 1971, my wife and I spent three days of our honeymoon in Budapest, Hungary, at the Béke Hotel.  When we walked into our double room, we found it had two single camp beds at opposite ends. The first night, we unmade the beds and discovered that the sheets on one of the beds were filthy. After complaining to the hotel staff, nothing was done (this was during the Communist days), and we wound up both sleeping in the other twin bed for three nights. Thirty-three years later, my daughter and I visited Budapest on a one-week...

This month’s winner is DENNIS CLINE of Ingleside, IL:

On a trip to China some years ago, my wife and I found the people most friendly and helpful. Their wide smiles often were accompanied by a Chinese phrase, “Mei wenti,” which we learned meant “No problem.”

Everywhere we traveled, we heard this term by young and old alike whenever we needed assistance. By the midpoint of our 6-week journey, my wife also began to use this expression with people whenever the occasion warranted.

Only on our last day, before flying home, did we learn the...

On a recent tour in Kenya, I was feeling a bit under the weather and decided to stay in my room instead of going to dinner. Shortly after our group had gone to the dining room, there was a knock on my door. When I opened it, a lodge employee brought in several rolls of toilet paper.

I didn’t quite understand this, as there already was plenty of TP in the bathroom. Nonetheless, I said, “Thank you,” and went back to bed.

The next morning, our group leader asked me if I had received the rolls and black tea he...
