Visa-free transit stays in the Chinese cities of Beijing and Tianjin have been extended from 72 hours to 144 hours. To qualify for the visa-free visit, a traveler must show that he has an ongoing plane ticket to another country, other than the one he arrived from, and that his flight out of China will be departing before the end of the visa-free period.

On Sept. 22, the transport regulator of London rejected Uber’s application of a new license to operate in the city, meaning that when Uber’s previous license expired on Sept. 30, the company would no longer be allowed to operate within the city. German airline airberlin (www.airberlin.com/en) declared bankruptcy in August, and on Oct. 15 it ceased flying on all of its international routes after its aircraft-leasing company requested the return of most of airberlin’s operating airplanes. Lufthansa is currently in talks to purchase airberlin and take over its routes.

In Tokyo’s Bunkyo¯ Ward, more than 3,000 azaleas of at least 100 species can be found on the grounds of the Nezu Shrine (1-28-9 Nezu, Bunkyo¯, Tokyo 113-0031, Japan; www.nedu jinja.or.jp [in Japanese only]).
