In southern Russia, a man in the town of Kizlyar, in the republic of Dagestan, opened fire on people exiting a church after an afternoon service on Feb. 18, killing five and injuring five others. • An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the Enga Province in central PAPUA NEW GUINEA on Feb. 26, causing landslides that killed at least 20 people and injured more than 300 others. Search-and-rescue operations were ongoing as of press time, with the death toll expected to rise.

Tropical Cyclone Gita, the strongest storm ever in Tonga’s recorded history, made landfall on the islands of Tonga on Feb. 12 with winds over 145 miles per hour. 

The storm damaged infrastructure as well as multiple buildings on Tongatapu and ‘Eua islands, even destroying the island nation’s 100-year-old Parliament House. It is estimated that some areas may be without power or shelter for months. One person was reported killed.

Mt. Sinabung, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, erupted on Feb. 19, spewing ash more than 3 miles into the air and causing a massive pyroclastic flow. No injuries were reported, but nearby towns were evacuated during the eruption. Worldwide, it was the largest volcanic eruption in the last five years.

At least 17 people were killed in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, on Feb. 19 when a large trash pile collapsed onto their homes. Rescue efforts were ongoing as of press time, and authorities were unsure how many people were still trapped.

The World Health Organization is warning of a drastic increase in cases of measles in Europe.

In 2017, more than 20,000 cases were reported in European countries, resulting in 35 deaths. In 2016, 5,273 cases were reported in the entire year, while in 2017 more than 5,000 cases each were reported in Romania and Italy.
