The Department of State warns of risks in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where armed groups steal vehicles, kidnap, rape and kill. In two separate incidents in April, foreigners were kidnapped by armed militia groups. Kinshasa remains a critical crime threat area, with armed robbery by groups posing as law enforcement.

The Department of State warns of the risks of traveling to Chad and recommends avoiding all travel to eastern Chad, the Chad/Sudan border area and the Chad/Central African Republic border area.

This warning is due to the insecurity caused by high levels of violent crime (robbery, carjacking, kidnapping and murder), clashes between Chadian government and rebel forces, and the constant risk of conflict among the populations in these areas.

All travel and commerce between South Korea and North Korea ended in May over the sinking of a South Korean ship for which North Korea has been accused but denies involvement. Tensions continue to rise. New sanctions on commerce with North Korea by the US were announced on July 21.

The Department of State canceled its Travel Warning for Thailand on July 20, citing “improvements in security conditions throughout the country.” The nightly curfew in Thailand has also ended, as has the state of emergency. However, emergency decree measures are still in effect in 19 provinces, including the Bangkok metropolitan area.
