Two friends accompanied my husband, Fred, and me on a 10-day bicycle tour of Armenia in September ’10. We found the trip description on the Web and e-mailed the company with questions. It sounded like a trip we could handle, especially since a van and driver would be accompanying us in case anyone needed a lift.

I am a man who absolutely loves to shop, something that makes my wife’s female friends extremely jealous. I even love to grocery shop. But most of all, I love to shop for things for our home on our trips abroad. In a half century of travel, I’ve learned many tricks that make my shopping more rewarding.

For more than 1,000 years, pilgrims from as far away as Zagreb, Budapest and Bergen have made their way to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain to stand in the church that holds the relics of St. James and pay homage. For many, the walk on the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James), itself, is reason enough for the journey. Today’s pilgrims embrace the Camino trek not only as a time for self reflection but also for the brief return to a simpler way of life.
Bhutan is a small, landlocked country bordered by China and India. There is only one airline, Druk Air, with two planes to get you there and seven pilots and 10 copilots trained to make the tricky landing at Paro Airport, the only airport in the country. So why go through the effort of traveling so far for a stay in such a small country? Visitors willing to take the long journey will be rewarded with experiences that will be remembered long afterward.
