In June 2014, my husband, Fred Teger, and I began a self-drive tour of several of the countries that comprised the former Yugoslavia.

As I started planning this 6-week trip, I was slightly apprehensive of the logistics, knowing that we would be traveling through areas where the Cyrillic alphabet is used. No way would I ever consider renting a car in Ukraine or Russia, which also use the Cyrillic alphabet, but, having read about the limited rail and bus services throughout the...

I traveled on a 12-day Trafalgar tour, “Italian Concerto,” in September 2014. The group consisted of 48 congenial participants, a couple of whom looked after me.

The tour

The pace of the itinerary was leisurely, with 10 hotel nights — three in both Rome and on the Amalfi Coast and two each in Florence and Venice. The benefit of a vacation containing no one-nighters lies in not having to pack and unpack your luggage too frequently.

In group...

Ethiopia, historically known as Abyssinia, is an amazing country located in the Horn of Africa and well off the regular tourist track. In January 2015, my wife, Sandra, and I spent three weeks there, with the first 11 days as part of a 20-person photography tour with National Geographic Expeditions ($17,000 for the two of us). This tour concentrated primarily on the tribal areas in the south.

Following that, we spent nine days on a private custom tour ($6,000, total) arranged...

Many of the great cities of the world warrant multiple visits to discover all of their hidden gems. London is no exception.

Despite visiting often, I still find exciting things to see and do. On a one-week visit in November 2014, I managed to see several museums and other sights that have been on my “to do” list for a long time.

All these venues are an easy 15- to 20-minute walk from nearby Underground stations. Bletchley is about an hour’s...

Answering an advert in the back of International Travel News for a single, senior woman to share expenses/travels/stateroom for an extended Indian Ocean trip with Voyages of Discovery (Scottsdale, AZ; 866/623-2689, www.voyagesofdiscovery.com), beginning in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in late November 2014, I made the split-second decision to take the leap, sight unseen.

The trip included a pre-cruise tour of Sri Lanka ($1,399) and three back-to-back cruises: “Treasures of the Indian...

My brother Charles and I have driven through Guatemala twice, and he had driven there many other times. I enjoyed, very much, traveling by car, stopping at roadside markets and seeing the people who live along the Pan-American Highway.

For our planned February 2015 trip, however, his wife, Jean, was in favor of a tour. So we booked an 11-day tour with Gate 1 Travel (Fort Washington, PA; 800/682-3333, www.gate1travel.com) for about $1,500 per person. I paid an extra single...

The evening concert in the mission of San José de Chiquitos.

My partner, Arcadio, and I departed Los Angeles on April 15, 2014, for Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, as guests of my dear “adopted brother” Pepín Orlando Jordán and his lovely wife, Blanca.

I had met Pepín in San Ignacio in 1966, where he had gone to study in the colegio run by the priests at the old mission there and where I was working as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I was renting a room in the house where he lived.

Pepín made arrangements for the four of us...

My husband, Jack, and I are longtime subscribers of International Travel News and have gleaned much from readers’ advice over the years. However, a September 2014 trip to Italy was the first we took from an ad we found in The Mart section, printed at the end of each month’s magazine — a small ad that finally drew me in after years of reading it. With our first phone call, I immediately took to June Morrocco, owner of To Italy With Love Tours (Grants Pass, OR; 971/706-9328,...
