Smart travelers now can book online to visit the Vatican Museum. Photo: Dominic Bonuccelli

One reason why Italy is so much fun is that it just keeps changing. Here are a few new developments that will be handy for you to know if you’ll be visiting the land of “la dolce vita.”

• Rome may be the “Eternal City,” but that doesn’t mean it has stopped evolving. The Vatican Museum, starring the Sistine Chapel, now has an online reservation system that’s a godsend; visit http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va.

July 6, 2009, marked the apogee of a yearlong celebration of Lithuania’s 1,000th anniversary. It was in 1009 that Lithuania was first mentioned in a written source, a German manuscript called the Quedlinburg Chronicle. In honor of the occasion, Vilnius had been selected as a Cultural Capital of Europe for the year.

To cap it all off, the reconstruction of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania had just been completed. July 6th, a national holiday in...

Sightseeing in style in Old Havana. Photos: Keck

by Randy Keck (Second of three parts on Cuba. Part one, in the May 2010 issue, thoroughly explored the legal considerations for Americans considering traveling to Cuba.)

Havana — lost in time

The most accurate way to describe Havana and Cuba in general is with two words: time warp. This haunting reality was ever present during my 12-day January ’10 Cuba tour, which was hosted by Toronto-based ElderTreks (800/741-7956, www.eldertreks.com), an ITN advertiser. Their...

Dear Globetrotter:

Welcome to the 411th issue of your monthly overseas travel magazine, the original travelers’ forum.

Before ITN came around, over 34 years ago, travel magazines and newspaper travel sections were rather one-sided, never printing a discouraging word. The major networks are Telecom Italia (TIM), Vodafone and Wind.

In Lake Mälaren, 18 miles west of Stockholm, Sweden, lies the small island of Björkö. Its size belies its importance in the Viking world of 1,100 years ago. On this island are the ruins of the town of Birka, which, together with the towns of Hedeby in Denmark and Kaupang in Norway, was one of the most important trading centers in Scandinavia during the Viking Age.

Founded around AD 790, Birka was part of a royal strategy to control trade in the Baltic through...

Street ball erupts with no warning in the streets of Trinidad, Cuba. Photos: Keck

(First of three parts)

I participated in a group tour to Cuba in January of this year courtesy of Canadian-based ITN advertiser ElderTreks (Toronto, Ont.; 800/741-7956). This inspiring journey indeed answered scores of long-held questions I had concerning the Cuban equation. It also left many questions unanswered and, predictably, posed additional ones.

In this three-part treatise on Cuba, I will discuss not only the amazing experience of traveling around Cuba but, specifically...

Dear Globetrotter:

Welcome to the 410th issue of your monthly overseas travel magazine.

Looking out for you, we’ve run across several warnings that I thought you should know about.

Trustwave (Chicago, IL; 312/873-7288, www.trustwave.com), a firm that works on behalf of the five major credit card brands, released a report on computer-security investigations they were hired to perform (through their SpiderLabs division) at various companies and organizations worldwide....
