The Netherlands American Cemetery
The Netherlands American Cemetery & Memorial, roughly six miles from Maastricht, should be on everyone’s must-see list — it’s a stirring experience. Many of the Dutch still talk about the Americans who liberated them during World War II. The site is the final resting place of at least 8,300 soldiers from the U.S., England, Canada and Mexico.
On our visit in 2000 I searched for a few minutes in a light rain until I found a memorial to a serviceman from my Hoosier state of Indiana. I was sorry he never had the good fortune to return to his loved ones, but, scanning the pastoral landscape, I decided it wasn’t so different from rural Indiana, and that was a reassuring thought.
