Has any one flown from FRA to Instanbul and then on down to JNB? What is the airline like?

There is a good forum for airline reviews: www.airlinequality.com
The link for reviews of Turkish Airlines is:

Last year, I was to fly on Turkish Air to Delhi with a stop in Istanbul. I ended up canceling that flight, due to scheduling reasons. My only issue with them was that they would not let you do a seat assignment until about a month before the flight. I hope that if you book with them, this policy has changed.

I've flown Istanbul-Simferapol, New York - Istanbul - New York and Istanbul - Batumi on TA. I booked the long haul tickets over the phone with the office in New York, and they were fine to deal with. I thought the flights slightly better than the US carriers, although not as good as the Asian.

Be aware that although I paid the New York office in USD, Citicards charged a foreign conversion fee!

Free City Tours
Some airlines and airports provide passengers access to unique amenities before, between, and after flights, easing the stress of long hauls and layovers. Turkish Airlines (www.turkishairlines.com) hosts ever-changing free guided city tours of Istanbul for their passengers who have at least 7-10 hours between connecting flights. The day-long tours include a private guide and visits to some of the city's most historic sites, including Topkapi Palace and Hippodrome Square.

Am flying Turkish air this summer from Chicago-Istanbul-Nairobi and return. Their seat assignment policy is still the same, deepening on flights. Was able to get seats from flights to and from US about 2 months out, but 1 month for others. Would be nice if they would allow seats when seat booked!

Turkish Airlines was named the Best Airline Europe at the 2011 World Airline Awards, in a ceremony held in the French Air and Space Museum at the Paris Air Show.

The runners-up in this category are Swiss Intl Air Lines taking 2nd place in the category, ahead of Lufthansa in 3rd position.

On page 61 of the July issue of ITN, Julie Skurdenis, a contributing editor on archeology, spoke very highly of her experience on Turkish Airlines.

With respect to prior seat assignments, they are not different than some other airlines we have flown recently. British Air does not allow seat assignments (at least in economy) until 24 hours in advance and Lufthansa doesn't do intra-European seat assignments until 24 hours either.

We'll be on Turkish Airlines next year from JFK-IST and on some domestic flights as well.
