Dunhallin House in Scotland

Over the past 27 years we’ve stayed at many dozens of B&Bs in the British Isles and none can compare with Dunhallin House. The house itself is only 11 years old. Margaret and Sandy Murray have been offering bed-and-breakfast for only 1½ years. In addition to the Murrays’ cordiality, Margaret serves the finest British breakfast imaginable.

They have five rooms, all with facilities en suite. We stayed there 12 nights, April 25-May 6, 2007, and the rate for the two of us was £50 ($100) per night. If you are driving, there is adequate parking for at least four vehicles. They also have a pleasant lounge with free use of the Internet.

It was an easy 45-minute walk from the house to the central district with its rail and bus stations and myriad shops and restaurants. With our 8-day Britrail Flex Pass (any eight days in two months) we took trips to Glasgow, Elgin, Perth, Pitlochy and more.

Margaret told us about the restaurant Fairways (Castle Heather; phone 01463 713335 or visit www.golflochness.com) at the Loch Ness Golf course, less than a 10-minute walk from Dunhallin House. It was so outstanding that we dined there every night during our stay. Dinner for the two of us, including tip but not wine, was about $35.
