Tour Review - Afghanistan

<p>Greetings, I trust all is well. I joined the Untamedborders (UTB) Melon and Grapes tour this year and I must say it was wonderful and fascinating. We had an excellent group of travelers and the guides were invariably helpful, knowledgeable and had great senses of humor (that later trait is especially important for me and this would be one of those countries where it helps). We really got to know each other and we became a compatible smooth group. There is nothing like being around experienced travelers. The guides were very flexible so it didn&#39;t seem like that much of a tour and they mostly deal in small groups. Of course the first question will be; &quot;is it safe?&quot; We all know the short answer to that one, but I was impressed with UTBs low profile high information approach to security which was at once well conceived and reassuring. IMO you could do this one on your own in the future, but for now being with careful, knowledgeable, vigilant guides is the way to go. One of them was James, who was simply great to be around and I hope to see him again sometime. Interestingly enough, I might have learned more on this two week trip than any similar excursion due to James and his sidekick- oops I mean wonderful coworker- Kausar. He is a Pashtun and was very amiable and willing to discuss any subject at length. I suppose having one local guide and one Brit allowed them to take in information and interact on multiple levels. The Afghans were extremely hospitable, quick to smile, sometimes inquisitive but never obtrusive and always welcoming. I never felt uncomfortable. For the fellow photography enthusiasts out there you get as many great men shots as you like and they continue to do what they were doing before you arrived. There are some superb looks in that country and they are very proud. Woman, on the other hand, are out of bounds. The itinerary is diverse so you get outstanding Islamic architecture ops and good scenery photos including some rural ops. Needless to say, no need to crop out the guy in the Bermuda shorts.<br />That&#39;s everything I can think of, questions and comments always welcome.<br />Best regards, Jon</p>
