Suggestions for Milan area?

I will be arriving in Milan on September 20, joining a tour on Sept24. The tour will include highlights of Milan, so I am looking for other things to do while in the area. I will not have a car, so would need to use public transportation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Be sure to visit the town of Bergamo. You can catch a train at Milan Central Station for the short trip. The upper town is the historic area, with several fascinating places to visit and the opportunity for picturesque exploration along its cobbled streets. The lower town is also worth some time. A funicular connects the two parts of the city.

In Milan itself, the Brera neighborhood is an artsy area full of galleries and boutiques with nice cafes and restaurants. Pinacoteca di Brera is a terrific art museum that you should make time to visit in case it is not included in your Milan tour itinerary.
