OAT Peru
It's been years since we took Real Affordable Peru with OAT in 2006, but I still fondly remember it for its unique itinerary and activities. We've taken around 10 OAT trips and this was among the better. Back in 1977, I visited Machu Picchu through a cheap charter package. After celebrating Christmas in Lima on that trip, we flew to Cuzco and visited Machu Picchu as a day trip. During our 2006, OAT trip I realized just how fascinating the country is and how much I had missed. We visited rural farm villages, old Inca settlements, religious sites and festivals, and even a curandero healing ceremony. In addition to Machu Picchu, we explored Ollantaytambo. The pace with extra activities allowed us to acclimate to the altitude before the more strenuous exploration of Machu Picchu itself. As for tips, drink only bottled water and be cautious about the foods. Bring bug spray to fend off sand fleas at the site. Get into good physical shape for the hiking at Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu. Otherwise, enjoy the trip! We've recommended it to others.
