We use a Capitol One credit card (no foreign transaction fees)on our international trips. (British Air credit cards and Sapphire credit cards are also foreign transaction fee-free). We have been in London at least once a year for the last 5 or 6 years. We have never had any problems with the card EXCEPT at unmanned terminals for getting rail tickets from Gatwick and at machines for the Underground tickets in London. We just stand in line and get the tickets from an agent and, if he asks, we tell him we do not have "chip and pin". You probably do not want to use your credit card at an ATM machine since you start incurring interest from the moment you get your money. There are multiple avenues for you to consider for using a debit card at an ATM fee-free (or almost)

British Airways does offer a "chip and pin" card, obtainable here in the US from Chase Bank. We use it when OUS to save on the transaction fees and other inconveniences. Try crossing a toll bridge in the early morning hours when there is no one at the toll gate. Thanks. Skip-Bonnie
