Cambridge, England

My husband and I will be travelling to Cambridge, England, in December to attend The Festival of Lessons and Carols at King's College. We are looking for a good hotel or B and B within easy walking distance of the College. Has anyone stayed at Hotel du Vin, Gonville Hotel or Arundel House? Any other suggestions? Also, is it best to rent a car for the trip from Heathrow to Cambridge? Or is taking the train fairly easy?

Its not necessary to rent a car, in fact, after such a long plane ride, with jetlag, driving on the other side of the road, and dealing with round-a-bouts, it might be close to suicidal. You can take a National Express Bus from Heathrow Airport to Cambridge, then a taxi to your hotel. Buses leave hourly and the ride is about 2 hours. www.nationalexpress.com
And from the Kings College website:
The coaches leave from Heathrow's Central Bus Station (for terminals 1 to 3), and from outside Terminal 4. The set-down point in Cambridge for coaches from Heathrow is Parkside, a 15 minute walk from King's.
Another alternative is to take the underground (tube) to Kings Cross Station, then a train to Cambridge. But all things considered (handling luggage, travel times,etc), the bus from Heathrow might be the easier alternative.

Thank you Adventuregirl. We've looked into trains from London to cambridge, but didn't know about the bus. will certainly consider this.

I might add that the Cambridge train station isn't particularly close to King's College (don't know about the bus station). I did walk it, but it was a longish hike. Enjoy the event - it's spectacular, one of my favorite travel memories.
