<p>I'm staying in Bangkok for 3 nights in Nov. after a tour in Bhutan (free stopover on Thai Air!) and am looking for a hotel. It seems that they are all big chains or very trendy boutiques. Does anyone know of a more Thai-inspired hotel, near a Skytrain stop? I would prefer $150 or less per night. A lot less would be great, I don't need fancy, I just don't want to limit my options.

I like staying at the Bel Aire Princess in Soi 5 off Sukhumvit Road. The Nana Skytrain Station is about a 4 min. walk away. The hotel is part of the Dusit Thani group,but is much smaller than their other hotels. I think it might be the training hotel for their 5-star group. It is a great location, service is wonderful, cost is moderate and prices seem to go down closer to arrival date. I tried some dates on their website and prices ran $70 (superior) to $133 (club level) for next week. Dates in November were running $82 (superior) to $143 (club level). They have various classes of rooms but I like the junior suite which is a larger bedroom, a sitting area and a dining room. There is one per floor and often costs just $20 or so more than the regular rooms. The soi (small street) has everything you would want -- restaurants, repair shops, small supermarket, optician,etc. And there is a night market on Sukhumvit.

You might also want to look at the The Royal River Hotel -- we had a river facing room (deluxe riverfront category) with a large balcony. You can watch life go by on the river. Cost is about $90. The website is: www.royalrivergroup.com
Thanks Joe. I hadn't thought about staying by the river, but someone else recommended another hotel on the river and in checking it out, I think that might be a good place to stay. I had thought I wanted to stay downtown near all the shopping malls, but near the palace and wats sounds interesting. Less generic big-city-could-be-anywhere.
