Travelers' Intercom

My daughter and I own a yoga studio and led a yoga retreat to Corfu, Greece, in September ’08. In researching activities for our group, I discovered that Albania is just across the border and easily accessible. Since I find border crossings irresistible, I was determined to visit. I found an excellent Albanian tour company that I thought other ITN readers might like to know about.

It is Albania Holidays Sipa Tours (Lagjia Nr3, Rruga 1 Maj, Ap/ Cakalli, Saranda, Albania; phone/fax 00355 85226675, mobile phone 00355/ 686024 700, e-mail info@sipatours.com or arben@sipatours.com or...

Along with seven other adventurous souls, I took a 15-day tour of Ethiopia offered by Patrick Syder Travel (Zenobia House, 23 Bowmans Close, Steyning, West Sussex, BN44 3SR, U.K.; phone/fax +44 [0] 1903 879737).

This classic itinerary through northern Ethiopia, April 12-26 2011, cost £1,790 (then, $2,873), including three domestic flights on Ethiopian Airlines, full board, an outstanding guide and the personal services of Patrick Syder, himself.

Ethiopia is one of two countries in Africa that were never colonized (the other is Liberia), although it was occupied briefly...

ITN printed a reader’s letter titled “Sky-high Charge for Scratch” back in the May ’08 issue, page 30. It prompted another reader to send in the following account of a similar experience with the same auto rental office the year before, one with a twist. — Editor

Through Auto Europe, my husband and I rented a car from National Car Rental at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany for 36 days in April-May ’07.

Because the rental period was six days over the 30-day credit card insurance term, Auto Europe suggested we use two credit cards, splitting the rental to April 8-May 8 and May...

My wife and I took the tour “Highlights of Spain and Portugal,” Sept. 18-Oct. 1, 2010, with Trafalgar Tours, having booked it through our AAA agent. Including our round-trip airfare, Cleveland-Atlanta-Madrid, the 14-day/13-night tour cost $6,000 for two plus another $1,300 for the optional tours.

Our group numbered 48 people on one bus. The main destinations were Madrid, Cordoba, Grenada, the Costa del Sol, Torremolinos, Seville, Lisbon and Porto, with the tour ending back in Madrid. The distance covered was some 2,000 miles.

The company’s brochure lists this trip as “...

Helmsley, England, a gorgeous village in the Yorkshire Moors which we visited April 10-12, 2008, boasts an exceptional restaurant within the Black Swan Hotel (Market Place, Helmsley, YO62 5BJ, U.K.; phone 01144 1439 770466, www.blackswan-helmsley.co.uk). Andrew Burton, a chef of extraordinary talent, injects his magic into every evening repast.

“Nibbles” of anchovy straws, toasted almonds and cheese biscuits were presented before we perused the menu. Four different fresh-baked bread samples accompanied the 6-course meal.

We each chose from three appetizers, three entrées and...

We returned from France on May 27 to find the June ’09 issue and Abbie Salny’s letter titled “Heads up on Paris Métro” (page 14), which said there are no longer any ticket booths in the Métro stations, only machines that accept credit cards or cash. There are, indeed, manned ticket booths in the Métro, just not in every station.*

We tried to use our American credit card in the ticket machine at the Gare de Lyon station, but it was rejected. European credit cards have a chip in them that is lacking in ours. Several times over the last decade, we have tried to use our credit cards at...

“There’s no denying it: traveling in Ethiopia is not easy.” So says my Lonely Planet “Guide to Ethiopia and Eritrea” in the chapter “Getting Started.”

And the trip I took — “Ethiopia, the Historic Northern Route & Timket Festival,” Jan. 13-26, 2011, from Spiekermann Travel (Eastpointe, MI; 800/645-3233), at a cost of $5,090, including single supplement; air from Tampa, Florida, and out of Washington Dulles; air taxes and surcharges; all meals, and gratuities to guides, drivers and hotel staff — was one of the more...

What would I have done differently? (See Oct. ’08, pg. 2.)

A few years ago, while on a prolonged visit to London, I decided to fly to Kiev, Ukraine, for a cruise on the Dnieper River. My London travel agent said that if she were to make a hotel reservation for me in Kiev, it would be very expensive. She said that I could find an English-speaking tourist agent at the Kiev air terminal who would be able to help me and it would be much cheaper.

Taking her at her word, I arrived at the terminal to find no tourist desk and no one who spoke English — not at the money exchange, not...
