Sunrise at 4,500 feet, with 12,080-foot Mt. Tobalchik looming.

Twenty years ago I read about the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia, south of the Bering Sea, and decided I had to go to that amazing place. What makes Kamchatka so fascinating is it sits atop three tectonic plates, making it home to 200-plus volcanoes, of which 30 are active. There were six eruptions between December 2010 and the time of my trip there, July 12-Aug. 2, 2011.

Kamchatka reputedly has 10,000 grizzly bears and has also been a Mecca for well-heeled fishermen from around the world, who take luxury vacations to catch 5- and 6-foot-long river salmon and trout. For...

Salta, in the far northwest of Argentina, has several interesting small museums. For my wife, Tamara, and me, the pick of the litter was Museo de Arte Étnico Americano (Fundación Pajcha, 20 de Febrero 831, Salta, Argentina; phone +54 387 422 9417 [website in Spanish]).

Museo Pajcha is located about eight blocks north and two blocks west of the Cathedral and the Plaza 9 de Julio. It recently moved to new quarters across the street from its original location at 838 20 de Febrero, but many tourist maps still show it at the previous location.

This museum displays regional art...

My husband, Stephen, and I had two days in Buenos Aires, Argentina, prior to boarding Oceania Cruises’ Insignia, so we hired a driver and also a guide, Monica Varela (phone 11/15 4407 0268 or e-mail monyliv@hotmail.com or varmonica@gmail.com), who was recommended in the guidebook “Frommer’s Buenos Aires” (third edition).

On Dec. 22, 2011, the first day of our private tour, at 1:30 in the afternoon on a residential street, Stephen was attacked from behind by two men. He was put in a choke hold, rendered unconscious and robbed of his watch. The attackers escaped when two more men on...

My wife, Lyn, and I found that dish towels imprinted with the name of our city are great to give as gifts overseas, and towels indicating a foreign city or country are great to give as gifts back home.

On a trip to Taiwan in 2001 I visited the Great National Treasures of China collection in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It’s a mindblower. My eyes almost dropped out of my head! Here are many treasures of Imperial China that were saved by the KMT in 1949, spirited away from the Communists.

Only about 20% of the collection is on display. It ranges from prehistoric ceramics, ironwork and pottery to weapons and much more. There are the most beautiful paintings, porcelain and woodcarvings and especially the most spectacularly carved jade.

For me, the most unique...

We don’t usually have favorable comments about car rental agencies, but in October ’03 we received extraordinary service from Dionysos S.A. Rent-A-Car (25 Syngrou Ave., Athens 11743, Greece; phone 210-9243310, fax 210-2943750, e-mail dionisos@otenet.gr), a franchisee of Thrifty Car Rental.

The operations manager, Andreas Tanteles, and each one of the agency’s employees with whom we dealt in person or over the phone, were wonderfully friendly and helpful.

The economy car we rented was in good working condition, and the rate was lower than other quotes we obtained, in some...

When my grandson got married in November ’03, we promised to pay for his honeymoon (within reason, of course). He told me, “Grandpa, if you do that, we insist that you come along.” Somewhat unusual, to say the least, but we were honored. My wife, JoAnn, said she’d go anyplace as long as it was cool and unusual. I suggested Ecuador and agreement was unanimous. We set up the trip for April ’04.

We flew nonstop from Miami to Quito on LanEcuador, part of the LanChile group of airlines, on a Boeing 757. The flight was on time and cabin service was fine.

I had been to Ecuador twice...

On July 29, 2011, my wife, Susann, was hit by a motorcycle while in a crosswalk in Paris. She sustained an injury to her leg that required surgery after we returned to the United States.

We had purchased airline tickets from Lufthansa via Expedia.com for various flights: from Paris to Prague on Aug. 6, to Budapest on Aug. 11 and back to Paris on Aug. 13. The cost was $1,982. The tickets were nonrefundable.

I nursed my wife in our Paris hotel until it became clear that she would not be able to continue our trip and we would have to return to the US. On Aug. 4, I had an agent...
