My wife, Jane, and I arranged a private tour in Ethiopia for 18 days with Yama Ethiopia Tours.

It’s always nice to receive the kind of warm attention upon arrival that I did, as a solo traveler, at the Priestville Guest House (10 Priestfield Rd., Edinburgh, Scotland, EH16 5HJ, U.K.; phone 0131 667 2435). For my stay, April 1-10, 2013, proprietors Colin and his wife, Trina, greeted me in their beautiful lobby area.

As requested, I was given a double room with en suite facilities. It was not only spacious but extremely clean, serviced every day. My daily rate, with breakfast, was $97. (Prices vary with the rooms, with discounts for longer stays. Write to Colin at bookings...

In the letter “GPS Travails in Belgium” (Nov. ’13, pg. 17), a subscriber wrote, “At the tourist office (in Aalst), we explained that we would like to travel some of the ‘gray’ (secondary) roads shown on the maps. I was told that with the introduction of GPS and mobile phones with map apps, maps were not being printed anymore!”

In March ’13, I purchased Michelin’s 2012 map No. 714 of the Benelux countries online from Barnes & Noble. There are lots of “gray roads” on it and town names; however, many routes do not show highway numbers. Although the map does not have a cities index...

I took the “Exotic Lands” cruise of Oceania Cruises (800/386-9283), and what an appropriate title that was!

The 12-day cruise aboard the new Riviera, Sept. 2-14, 2012, began in Barcelona and ended in Lisbon. We visited Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Granada, Seville, Santa Cruz de la Palma and Arrecife in Spain; the Canary Islands; Madeira and Lisbon, Portugal, and Agadir and Casablanca, Morocco.

This was our second sailing with Oceania and we loved it. Their restaurants and food rival any top restaurants in New York, Paris, etc. The attention to detail and service was...

My husband, Jim, and I visited Nicaragua to experience the beauty of the land, lakes, volcanoes, art and history. Our 12-day custom trip, Jan. 19-31, 2012, from Latin American Escapes (Chico, CA; 800/510-5999), was a modified version of their “Magic of Nicaragua” itinerary. We saw everything we wanted to see and more.

Our private tour for the two of us cost $3,275 per person and included all land costs (except for tips and a few meals) and a round-trip flight from Managua to San Carlos. Our round trip from Tucson to Managua via Houston cost $986 each.

I took a van tour called “Natural Wonders of Iceland” that went around the entire coast of Iceland, July 7-15, 2012. It was with Nordic Visitor (Brietartún 13, 105 Reykjavik, Iceland; phone +354 578 20 80 or, in the US, 800/490-1019), a Swedish company with an office in Reykjavik.

The land cost was $2,435, and I paid an additional single supplement of $625. This covered stays in guest houses and lodges, all excellent; breakfast and dinner each day, and site admissions. I booked my Icelandair flight for $1,114.

A few optional excursions were offered at extra charge. There...

My favorite city is Bucharest, Romania. From my 18th trip there, I have some wonderful hotels and restaurants to recommend.

May 1-5, 2013, I stayed at Hotel Scala (C.A. Rosetti nr. 19, 020011, Bucharest, RO; phone +40 31 104 11 11, fax 31 814 61 48), a beautiful boutique hotel in a former architect’s home in a location very handy to the center of the city.

It contains 11 lovely guest rooms with all the nicest amenities. The cost of $95 per day for one person included taxes and a wonderful buffet breakfast.

On my return to Bucharest from Transylvania, I stayed at the...

My wife and I rented an apartment from Budapest Vacation Rentals (phone, in the US, John Farago at 917/913-0815 or, in Budapest, +36 20 945 1679) for the week of Sept. 8-15, 2012. This agency had seven apartments of various sizes and in various locations in the city. We selected Apartment Andrei (Bakáts tér 8) and were very happy with it.

The booking process was very smooth. The owner responded promptly to questions about the apartment and the area, including café and bakery recommendations. No deposit was required, only credit card details to secure the booking, with payment in...
