I recommend the following two new travel books.

• For those of you who have been to Africa or plan to travel there, I would like to recommend Paul Theroux’s new book, “Dark Star Safari — Overland from Cairo to Capetown” (2003, Houghton Mifflin Co. ISBN 0618134247 — 496 pp., $28). In his description of the gritty and chaotic conditions encountered on his overland journey, he reveals a side of Africa that is unlikely to be seen along the tourist trails.

He has this to say about well-meaning humanitarian, political, economic and developmental assistance provided by foreign...

Here are hotel recommendations from our trip to France, May 19-June 1, 2009.

Normandy region — Le Château de Vouilly (phone 33 [0] 02 31 22 08 59, fax 22 90 58), in the town of Vouilly, is a perfect base for visiting the beaches of Normandy and the tapestries of Bayeux.

This lovely, historic country manor house is owned by two gracious hosts, James and Marie Jo Hamel. Beautifully decorated rooms, a generous breakfast and beautiful gardens planted and tended by Marie make this a very special place. €95 (near $136), including breakfast.

The house served as the center for...

I renewed a passport in September 2010 through the mailing process established by the Department of State. I received a 10-year passport with a meager 17 pages available for visas or stamps.

I called the National Passport Information Center at 877/487-2778 and was told that I should have made a request for more pages at the time I mailed in form DS-82 along with my old passport and a check.

I pointed out that on the website, www.travel.state.gov, I found nothing about that under “Renew Passport” or on the DS-82 form. The pleasant customer service agent replied that I should...

For Barbara Johnson of Sierra Vista, Arizona, ITN printed her plea for names of companies offering overseas tours geared to active octogenarians and nonagenarians (Jan. ’10, pg. 56 & April ’10, pgs. 32 & 69). Barbara wrote, “I’m an 84-year-old, healthy, active woman, and I would love to know about tours that cater to those about my age who are well traveled and always eager to learn more.

“I have gone with Elderhostel (Boston, MA; 800/454-5768), but it has renamed its programs Exploritas (Dec. ’09, pg. 73) and added services appealing more to the boomers. I feel more...

My husband and I were traveling independently in the Outback of Australia’s Northern Territory in July ’04. Suddenly my husband and I looked to the side of the road and both said, “Oh, no, that ‘roo’ is going to jump right into us.” Within seconds that beautiful kangaroo had committed suicide and our car had a great amount of damage.

Three days later a flock of birds smashed into the windshield, doing more damage to the car.

The next day, on the way to the middle of nowhere, the car said, “Chug, chug, chug.” With great skill, my husband nursed the gas pedal and moved us along...

After visiting our new granddaughter in London in October ’09, my wife, Kay, and I traveled through Scotland and England’s Lake District via train. We obtained our Senior Railcards at a local train station for £26 (near $42) each, but it would have cost only £23.40 if purchased online at www.senior-railcard.co.uk. They are also available (at full price) from all London airports except Heathrow.

By using the passes, we saved £166 ($286) on the total rail fares during our 9-day excursion. And the passes are good for one year from the date of purchase.

Setting out by rail from...

I was in Israel for a conference and had three days afterward (Sept. 11-14, 2009) to revisit Jerusalem. In particular, I wanted to visit the Herodium, a conical hill near Jerusalem where the tomb of King Herod the Great was identified only in 2008, and Hezekiah’s Tunnel, a very interesting relic of Biblical times that wends 500 meters through solid rock, with running water on the floor the entire way. Hezekiah’s Tunnel is near the Area G excavations of the City of David, just outside the Dung Gate.

On the Web, I found Shmuel Browns (phone 02 562 0785), a licensed Israel tour guide...

In St. Petersburg, I highly recommend the independent-tour-guide company DenRus (Ligovsky Pr. 73 Office 608-610, St. Petersburg 191040, Russia; phone +7 [812] 572 4511 or, from the US, 561/459-5534). My husband, Lou, and I used DenRus during our 3-day cruise stop there, July 19-21, 2009, staying on the ship at night.

We signed up for the “Value Tour,” at $395 per person for the three days, with a promise that there would be no more than 20 to 25 people on the tour. As it turned out, we were the ONLY ones to sign up from our ship, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Voyager, so we had a...
