When planning a trip for October ’09, my wife, Marilyn, and I decided to include a tour of the World War I battle sites in northern Belgium and France. This would be a special tour for my wife, whose uncle’s name is inscribed on the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge, the site of a significant battle.

We did not wish to drive ourselves and we wanted a knowledgeable guide to show us around. After doing some checking on the Internet, we decided to go with Mike Williamson of Williamsomme Tours (12 Abbey St., Faversham, Kent, ME13 7BE, UK; phone +44 0 01795 538069, www....

Clutching our tickets, passports and visas (at — gasp! — $100 each), my husband and I inched into the Aeroflot line. It was Sept. 5, ’03, and we were bound for Moscow from San Francisco.

Arriving in Moscow, we were met by a representative from Peter the Great Cruises (Brooklyn, NY; phone 800/828-7970) and whisked to M/S Peter the Great (or Zosima Shashkov), the river ship which would be our home for the next three weeks.

On our way to Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), we would stop at various ports along the Volga River, then return to Moscow on the opposite side of the river...

I read the reader’s letter “Wildly Varying Cruise Fares Irksome” in the January ’04 issue. I have been on 39 cruises with various lines. As Bill Bennett put it (page 27), “cruise lines vary their prices according to demand.” I agree that is true. I have booked both early and late, and even though I am a past passenger with various lines I must be there at the right time to get the deals. I believe you just luck out unless you are in the know.

A “low-budget-cruise junkie,” I try to find inside cabins on cruises of seven to 10 days. I book an inside cabin and more often than not get...

On May 22, ’04, I called Grand Circle Travel to see about reserving the “Great Rivers of Europe” trip taking place Aug. 29-Sept. 16. I spoke to Robert in Customer Service and told him we wanted to reserve that date and the extension to Brussels. He checked and informed me that there was one cabin still available, cabin 101. I made the reservation and gave him my Visa number for the deposit of $1,000. He told me to call the company to initiate the final payment when the invoice and information packet arrived. I did this and the final payment was made in June.

Syria isn’t often visited by Americans. My wife, Arlene, and I first traveled there in 1999 and were so impressed with the country’s historical, archaeological and biblical treasures that we decided on a repeat visit in February 2010.

We traveled with Voyages Jules Verne (21 Dorset Sq., London, NW1 6QE, U.K.; phone +44 20 7616 1000). The cost of our eight-night group tour, “From the Apostles to the Crusades,” was $3,281 each, which included air from London to Damascus. We upgraded our flights on BMI for $1,535 each. We spent four nights in Damascus, two nights in Homs and two in...

I read with interest the reader’s comments in the letter titled “Flights Spoiled a Good Cruise” (Jan. ’05, pg. 26), regarding the flights assigned by Grand Circle Travel (Boston, MA). We are also Grand Circle “Inner Circle” members.

On the five trips we have taken with Grand Circle and one with Insight Vacations (Long Island City, NY), we have been booked on Lufthansa flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Frankfurt (FRA). The 10-across seating (3-4-3) can be a bit of a problem with the seat pitch used by Lufthansa. We have learned to deal with the seating arrangement in order to have a...

On Nov. 7, I was scheduled to take Northwest Airlines flight No. 49 to Detroit, Michigan, out of Paris’ Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport. My e-ticket did not indicate which terminal I would be leaving from. When I told the Gare Montparnasse Navette bus driver “KLM,” he dropped me at Terminal Two. The signage there was for Air France/KLM/Northwest as well as Delta, Continental, Alitalia, Aeromexico, etc.

I was aware that Air France had bought KLM in mid-September, so the signs didn’t confuse me. I am also used to flying out of Charles de Gaulle because I had done it four times in the...

Three friends and I spent two weeks in fascinating and beautiful Myanmar, Jan. 24-Feb. 8, 2010. We chose to hire a private guide with a car and driver, which afforded us the opportunity to stop in villages that don’t often see tourists and to purchase from local artisans.

We were rewarded with moments of human connection, often without a common language — meeting students who were attending classes under a tree, visiting an orphanage and becoming integral parts of a spirit festival. The Burmese people were extremely benevolent and gentle.

We did not miss the “regular” tourist...
