The highlight of a March trip to Chile was the Lake Crossing (Cruce de Lagos), where we actually crossed the Andes by boat and bus from Puerta Varas to Bariloche in Argentina.

You go by bus from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas to Lago Todos los Santos, then by boat, then bus and so on, with a stop for lunch at a lovely resort in Peulla and finally a boat trip on Lago Nahuel Huapi to Bariloche. This was an all-day, 12-hour trip but well worth every minute due to the spectacular scenery. The trip also may be done in reverse.

I must say that we were very fortunate to have had a...

What can you see through the woods but for the trees? On my May ’07 Trans-Siberian Railroad trip I saw plenty.

I saw the different shades and hues of the forest trees, the pristine crispness of the trees and tundra, and the majestic snowcapped mountains in the far background.

I saw the enormity of it all, the huge expanse and vastness, the isolation and remoteness. I saw the loneliness and solitude it offered. The raw beauty of its nature, its ruggedness, and its calmness.

I saw its streams and lakes — and was totally taken in. The awe-inspiring landscape that I wish I...

We were booked to take United Airlines flight No. 899 from Los Angeles to Narita, Japan, on Oct. 16, 2006. We checked our luggage, then checked in for boarding. Just before boarding, it was announced that the flight was overbooked and that anyone who would take Singapore Airlines flight SQ11 a few hours later would receive an incentive credit of $400. We volunteered for the offer and felt lucky to be among the few people to benefit from such an offer.

However, upon arriving at Narita Airport on Oct. 17, our luggage was missing. We finally received it at our hotel in Nagasaki on...

My wife, Betty, and I flew Air India from Los Angeles to New Delhi on Jan. 25, 2006, and returned on Feb. 15, 2006. Wanting to apply to their frequent-flyer program so we could get credit for air-miles with Air India and/or their partners, I asked on the plane for an application. They said they didn’t have any but usually do and to ask at their check-in desk when we stopped in Frankfurt, Germany. I did and was told, “Ask on the plane to New Delhi.” Again, they said they had none (though they usually do) and to ask at check-in in New Delhi, which I did. I was told to apply for one on the...

I learned from a professional photographer, who is also a Kodak retiree, that the color of clothing can be very important when traveling if you expect to be in your pictures. Bright, solid colors photograph well, like a red umbrella on a rainy day.

White will stand out and dominate your picture, distracting the eye from your intended focal point, so in taking pictures try to avoid people with white shirts.

I recently read about a spray for $4 that takes wrinkles out of clothes. But you don’t need to spend money to take out wrinkles. All you need is a small spray bottle and tap water.

Just lightly spray the item. You can actually see the wrinkle relax and disappear. It doesn’t take long for the item to dry, maybe half an hour. Works every time.

When I’m traveling and have clothing items that need touching up, I usually spray them in the evening and hang them in the closet, leaving spaces between for air to circulate. Give it a try on one of your shirts and you’ll see how great...

On a Grand Circle Travel trip to Lapland, we saw these graves. The white “flowers” that cover them are actually lichen. — GRACE NEWMAN, Ponte Vedra, FL

• In both the Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale train stations in Italy, the overhead signs that point toward washrooms, exits, platforms, etc., also direct travelers to ticket sales offices (biglietterie). In each station I saw only a single Trenitalia ticket office but several travel agencies sporting lots of Trenitalia logos.

It can be difficult to distinguish the official sales office operated by Trenitalia from the travel agency ticket offices (especially in Naples). Pay close attention or you may find yourself paying an unexpected sales commission on your tickets.

On my...
