While traveling by car in western Sicily in September ’06, we were in need of a restaurant for supper. A local merchant directed us to Garten Pub (Via Erice 145, Valderice 91019,Trapani Province, Sicily, Italy; phone/fax +39 0923 892377) as a place to get good rustic Sicilian cuisine.

The welcoming owner, speaking passable English, informed us that he had no menu as such but that we should decide whether our small group wished “meat” or “fish” and that his son in the kitchen would prepare us a good platter.

We got excellent antipasto, the large platter of well-prepared fish...

I booked a flight and hotel package with Expedia for April 19-26, 2007. I did this several months before departure and opted to include the Expedia Package Protection plan, which was good because I had to use it only three hours before my flight for a very unexpected reason.

I live on the 24th floor of a highrise condominium. A week or so before my trip, we were warned that there would be an elevator shutdown for a few hours on the day of my flight. I finished some last-minute shopping and returned just before the elevators were restarted, still with plenty of time to make my flight...

One of my favorite London museums is the Guildhall Art Gallery (Gresham St., Guildhall Yard, London, EC2P 2EJ, U.K.; phone 020 7332 3700 or fax 020 7332 3342). This gallery is one of the best-kept secrets in London. I discovered the Guildhall while reading a newspaper article on the tube!

The original art gallery opened in 1885, but the modern building opened in 1999. The collection includes statues and busts of famous Britons, including a 2001 Neil Simmons statue of Margaret Thatcher. The collection also includes paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds, William Lionel Wyllie, and Frederic...

I like to travel. As a full-time wheelchair occupant, having had a stroke 10 years ago, I want to pass along a few observations for handicapped travelers.

I like cruises best. I did do 6,000 miles by auto in summer 2007, but I prefer ships. I have done two Caribbean cruises, in 2006 and 2007, and a 10-day cruise to Manaus, Brazil, in 2008.

Cruising on a 700- to 1,400-passenger ship is best, for me. An elevator is a must.

I prefer to take an aide along as a roommate to help me bathe and dress. I have found cabins for handicapped passengers to be large but varied in...

We often stay in the Bloomsbury section of London (the last time in November ’05) and enjoy visiting the sights of “literary London.”

Charles Dickens’ house is easy to find. It’s right there in Bloomsbury and is now the Charles Dickens Museum (48 Doughty St., London, WC1N 2LX, U.K.; phone +44 [0] 20 7405 2127 or visit www.dickensmuseum.com).

From Bloomsbury, take the Golders Green tube or the Hampstead Heath tube and go to Highgate Cemetery, where Karl Marx and Mary Shelley, among other luminaries, are buried. The Spaniards Inn pub (Spaniards Road, Hampstead Heath, London,...

After spending two weeks in Paris, May 9-22, 2008, including a day trip to London on the Eurostar, I thought, in view of the falling dollar, a few notes on prices might be of interest to ITN readers.

• For some years, my wife, Josie, and I have visited PARIS annually, and in that time there has been a small increase in prices generally, as there has been in the USA.

Early on, with the strong dollar, the hotel we’ve been using in Paris was a 2-star undervalued find. Since the introduction of the euro, the rates have gone up about €20-€30. Last year it wasn’t so good a bargain...

Antarctica. What an adventure! Yes, it’s far away and it’s expensive to get there, but, as the last of the seven continents, for us, Antarctica was calling. So when my husband, Jerry, and I received literature from Galapagos Travel (783 Rio Del Mar Blvd., Ste. 49, Aptos, CA 95003; 800/969-9014 or 831/689-9192) about a trip there in January ’07, we decided to check it out. We had traveled with Galapagos Travel in June ’04 and we trusted them to pick an ecologically minded ship with a good itinerary.

Our 17-day cruise, Jan. 9-25, 2007, was aboard...

Approximately 2,500 visitors visited the kingdom of Bhutan for the late September/early October festivals in 2006 — a record-high attendance. Despite full flights and hotels at capacity, the festival season was one of the most enjoyable I’ve ever experienced. Everyone was on their “best behavior,” following the new rules governing demeanor and dress for the festival season.

The Ministry of Home & Cultural Affairs had published this circular:

“Thimphu Tsechu — Tsechus, or festivals, are religious events. The ground where they are held is purified and consecrated by lamas...
