Two sites in France paying homage to artist Pablo Picasso this year were mentioned in ITN (June ’09, pg. 70). I would like to add a third.

In the mountain village of Les Baux de Provence there is an underground rock quarry that has been transformed into a “Cathedrale d’Images,” where huge images of Picasso’s works are projected onto the quarry walls, accompanied by music. The total effect is awe-inspiring.

Our visit to the quarry turned out to be the highlight of our Grand Circle Travel river cruise, “Cruising Burgundy and Provence to the Côte d’Azur,” April 27-May 8, 2009,...

The MS Deutschland, a 520-passenger ocean liner of Peter Deilmann Cruises (Alexandria, VA; 800/348/8287, www.deilmann-cruises.com), offers theme cruises, including classical music cruises. I was aboard for the Sept. 18-Oct. 1, 2008, classical music cruise from Hamburg, Germany, to Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The basic cruise cost started at $5,391 per person, double occupancy, and included airfare from New York, European airport transfers, meals, all shore excursions and all musical performances aboard the ship. Additional costs were $265 air taxes, $125 port charges and $130 fuel...

Over many years of travel, I’ve found that the warnings in Lonely Planet guidebooks’ “Dangers and Annoyances” sections are on target and certainly not alarmist. I did not fully appreciate, however, their warning about Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja (Old City), which said, “Wallet- and purse-snatches are not uncommon.” Amen to that!

My wife and I were in Montevideo, Uruguay, for three days in November ’10, and one of our traveling companions was victimized by wallet-snatching on two consecutive days in the Ciudad Vieja. Both incidents...

I was delighted to read of Randy Keck’s enjoyment of the Azores (April ’09, pg. 72 & May ’09, pg. 75). My husband, John, and I, traveled there March 31-April 6. Azores Express (800/762-9995, www.sata.pt) was our agency also. We paid $1,209 each for round-trip air from Boston, inter-island flights and six nights’ accommodations.

We visited the islands Terceira and São Miguel. We drove ourselves around each with a rented car but didn’t dare try navigating the central portions on our own. The signage was not always clear, and the locals drove very fast for the width of the roads....

I’ve taken six trips to Syria, most recently in March ’08 (Oct. ’08, pg. 17), and recommend the guide Nabil Mallah, who works with the travel agency Omayad Tours & Travel in Damascus (P.O. Box 34968, Damascus, Syria; phone 00963 11 3342255 or 3316058, fax 11 2212639, e-mail omayad.trvl@net.sy or visit www.omayadtours.com.sy). The office is located on the first floor of the Mazloum Building, behind the Four Seasons Hotel on Brazil Street.

Omayad Tours has planned two of the trips my wife and I have taken, including the flight arrangements. They are very good, very reliable, very...

I’m writing in response to the subscriber’s letter titled “Cruising ‘Italian Style’ on Costa Europa” (July ’09, pg. 31), which listed multiple complaints. My friend and I, both Americans, were also on the Jan. 17-31, 2009, sailing of that ship, in the Indian Ocean, for which the base price was $3,340 plus a fuel supplement of $252. (I purchased my own air.)

We and four other Americans dining with us daily did not share the above-mentioned subscriber’s opinion. We did not spend time dissecting the ship or the dinner service. In fact, one of the women developed a friendly relationship...

My wife and I were assigned Juan B. Padilla (mobile phone [505] 86641048 or e-mail juansinmiedo44@hotmail.com) as our guide on four days of our visit to Nicaragua, Dec. 27, 2010-Jan. 3, 2011. We were using a package of hotels and day tours purchased through Tara Tours (Miami, FL; 800/327-0080), which advertises in ITN.

Tara Tours contracted with the Nicaraguan branch of Gray Line (Denver, CO; 800/966-8125) for our hotels; airport-hotel transfers; transfers between Managua, Granada and Leon, and several day trips, including a city tour in each and two volcano excursions. Juan...

Is it a fantastic forgery or a miraculous image? Either way, the Shroud of Turin is one of the most researched and most mysterious artifacts in the world. Thoroughly studied, yes, but rarely seen — in the past 300 years, the enigmatic piece of linen has been on public display only 17 times.

Soon that will be 18. In the city of Turin (Torino to her residents) in Italy, the Shroud of Turin will be on display in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, April 10-May 23, 2010. I’ve made my plans to see it and found the arrangements to be pretty simple.

Visits are by reservation only...
