Tour with a Canada park ranger

This item appears on page 53 of the March 2020 issue.

Visitors to Red Bay National Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Canada’s Labrador province, can book hour-long tours with a park ranger to the 16th-century Basque whaling outpost there.

“If These Bones Could Talk” takes visitors along the beach through the skeletal remains of the harvested whales. A second tour, “Digging Through Time,” goes by boat to Saddle Island to the former whale-oil-processing area and other archaeological sites.

Both tours are offered only when the historic site is open, between June and September, and must be booked in advance. For the cost and to book, call 709/458-2417 or email pc.infolhnredbay-redbaynhsinfo.pc@canada.ca.

Entry to Red Bay National Historic Site costs CAD11.90 (near $9), adult, or CAD10.20, senior 65 or older, with those under 17 free. Visit www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/nl/redbay.
