Nigeria suicide bombing
This item appears on page 16 of the February 2017 issue.
Two female suicide bombers detonated their bombs in a market in the city of Madagali, in northern Nigeria, on Dec. 9, killing at least 30 people and injuring dozens more.
As of press time, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack, but Nigeria has been battling Islamist militant group Boko Haram for control of the northern areas of the country, and the group has used female suicide bombers in past attacks. Boko Haram captured Madagali for a short time in 2015, but was defeated there by the Nigerian military within a few months.
