The Department of State warns of the risks of traveling to Niger, due to terrorist activity, kidnappings and high crime by extremist groups, including AQIM, Daesh and Boko Haram. Terrorist organizations, armed robbers and smugglers operate in the areas bordering Mali and Libya and throughout northern Niger.
On March 3, after a spate of deadly attacks, the Nigerien government declared a state of emergency for seven departments of the Tillabéri and Tahoua regions bordering Mali.
