Mozambique cyclone
Tropical cyclone Dineo made landfall in southern Mozambique on Feb. 16, killing at least seven people, destroying more than 20,000 buildings and leaving 130,000 people homeless.
Dineo then moved south to South Africa and was downgraded to a tropical storm, though it maintained winds of 60 miles per hour. Some sections of Kruger National Park, a popular safari destination, were closed for the duration of the storm.
Philippines earthquake
On the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, an earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale occurred near the city of Surigao on Feb. 11. Four people were killed and more than 100, injured. More than 90 aftershocks were recorded.
Including the collapse of a hotel and of a bridge, the quake damaged buildings and infrastructure and left many residents without power or water. The Surigao Airport closed temporarily because cracks had formed on runways.
