France extends emergency
This item appears on page 17 of the February 2017 issue.
The Prime Minister of France, Bernard Cazeneuve, announced on Dec. 12 that the country’s state of emergency, in place since Nov. 15, 2015 (following the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris), would be extended until July 2017. It was originally set to expire in mid-January. It is the fourth time that this state of emergency has been extended.
This rule expands the ability for French authorities to detain suspects and conduct searches of personal property.
