Costa Rica’s Magmática

Located on the road leading to the active volcano Irazú and featuring videos and interactive exhibits on how Costa Rica was shaped by geological forces, from earthquakes to volcanoes, the attraction Magmática (phone +506 2552 0304) opened in October 2015 on Diagonal 31, off Ruta 219, in Cartago.

Guests on tours, occurring every half hour from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., also learn emergency safety measures, and a visit ends with an earthquake simulator re-creating the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that killed 700 people in Cartago in 1910 and left the city in ruins. It also can simulate the 8.8, 2010 Chilean quake.

A tour (in Spanish only) costs $15 adult or $10 child. A restaurant and gift shop are on site.
