Boko Haram in Nigeria and Cameroon

The Islamist militant group Boko Haram is active in the northeastern region of Nigeria and the far north of neighboring Cameroon.

In the city of Gombe, Nigeria, on July 16, at least 50 people were killed in two bomb blasts in a public market, one bomb hidden in the market and the other on a suicide bomber. The market was crowded with people shopping for the traditional feast marking Eid al-Fitr, the day after the last day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan (in 2015, June 18-July 16).

On July 17, two suicide bombers, one reportedly a 10-year-old girl, targeted a prayer gathering in the town of Damaturu, killing at least nine people.

On July 25, a suicide bomber in the town of Maroua, Cameroon, killed 19 people near a popular bar. No organization took responsibility.

On July 26, a suicide bomber at a crowded market in Damaturu, Nigeria, killed at least 16 people and injured more than 50. The bomber was reported to be a girl of 10. 

According to Amnesty International, since the Nigerian conflict with Boko Haram began in 2009, more than 17,000 people have been killed in Nigeria.
