Dali, China, entry fee

Near Kunming in southwestern China’s Yunnan Province, the Old City of Dali — capital of the former kingdom of Dali, which dates back to the eighth and ninth centuries AD — will begin charging a fee of CNY30 (near $4.80) to any traveler who is a member of a tour group. Travelers visiting independently will not be charged the fee. 

Located in modern Dali City, the Old City was a stop on the Silk Road. It is surrounded by a restored, 14th-century wall and contains Ming-era pagodas and traditional Bai folk houses decorated with woodcarvings, wash drawings and marble.

The fees will help with the maintenance of structures. Some scenic sites in the city may charge additional entry fees.
