Inuit tours in Nunavut

This item appears on page 62 of the July 2015 issue.

Visitors to the town of Arviat, on the west coast of Hudson Bay in Canada’s northern Nunavut province, can enjoy Inuit-operated cultural activities, including traditional hunting, dogsled rides and storytelling, trying foods like caribou and musk ox, and seeing places of historical interest, such as Qikiqtaarjuk, with evidence of 800-plus years of human occupation. Seasonal tours focus on wildlife, including caribou and polar bear migrations.

There are three places to stay in Arviat: the Padlei Hotel (888/866-6784, www.arviathotel.com), at about $220 per person per night; Katimavik Suites (Box 420, Arviat, Nunavut, X0C 0E0, Canada; 867/857-2752, www.katimavik suites.com), and Bayside Bed & Breakfast (867/857-2653). Arviat has an airport, with flights to Rankin Islet, Churchill and Winnipeg.
