Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Borneo
This item appears on page 54 of the January 2008 issue.
Sepilok, Sabah, Malaysia, about 300 kilometers north of Borneo, is home to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. The habitat of this man (orang) of the forest (hutan) is threatened by palm oil production, which has cleared large tracts of rainforest. At the centre, orangutans walk without fear along the boardwalks and can be observed in the trees and being fed.
