This month’s winner is NINA ARRABIT of Santa Rosa, CA:
In January of this year we sailed the M/V Nordkapp, a Norwegian icebreaker, to Antarctica. Our first of eight landings was at Arctowski, the Polish Antarctic Station.
The sun was shining, but it was very cold and we all dressed for it. I put on silk underwear, wool pants and a thick sweater. Over those went the waterproof pants and a huge blue parka issued by the ship, plus scarf, earmuffs, hat, heavy gloves and, finally, knee-high waterproof boots and a life vest.
With help from the crew, we managed to climb out of our polar landing craft and were waddling up the hill to the station when a door opened in one of the barracks and out jogged a Polish scientist. . . dressed only in shorts, T-shirt and running shoes!
